Is Arm & Hammer Detergent toxic?
Low to moderate concern, and you can drop it to low by buying the Free & Clear version.
Arm & Hammer liquid detergent is baking soda plus biodegradable anionic and nonionic surfactants, enzymes, and (in scented versions) fragrance. The base cleaning chemistry is unremarkable and rinses out. The two real flags are fragrance and preservatives in the scented variants. The 'Free of Perfumes and Dyes' version removes the main concern.

It cleans ordinary laundry at a low price with biodegradable surfactants and enzymes that lift everyday soils. The Free & Clear option is a genuinely sensible low-cost pick for fragrance- and dye-sensitive households.

Choose Free & Clear and run an extra rinse. Fragrance and dye residue on infant clothing is the thing to remove.
Low concern on washed, dried fabric. Fragrance-free reduces residue that ends up on bedding pets sleep on.
Low concern once laundered and dried. Free & Clear for pet bedding is the better call.
Free & Clear is low concern. Scented versions can leave fragrance on sheets and clothing that bothers airways at night.
Use Free & Clear, double-rinse. Fragrance and preservative residue on fabric is a leading eczema trigger; the dye-free formula helps a lot.
Laundry detergent is the one cleaner you wear all day
Most cleaners you rinse off a surface and walk away. Detergent is different, because whatever survives the rinse cycle stays in the fibers of the shirt against your skin and the pillowcase under your face for hours.
That changes which ingredients matter. The surfactants do their job and mostly rinse free, so they are not the worry. The fragrance and the preservative are, because they are designed or destined to linger, and both are common contact allergens. This is exactly why dermatologists steer eczema and sensitive-skin patients to a fragrance-free, dye-free detergent and an extra rinse. With Arm & Hammer the fix is in-brand and cheap: the Free of Perfumes and Dyes version strips out the two ingredients doing the irritating, and an extra rinse clears the residue. Buy that one and a moderate-concern product becomes a low-concern one.
