Is Persil ProClean toxic?

Moderate concern. Strong cleaner, but fragrance and skin-sensitization flags are the trade-off; the Sensitive Skin version helps.

Moderate concern
Use deliberately, not as a daily default.
The short answer

Persil ProClean is a high-performance enzyme-and-surfactant detergent with fragrance and optical brighteners. EWG rates most ProClean liquids in the F range, scoring high specifically for skin allergies and irritation, with the fragrance load and brighteners as the drivers. It cleans aggressively, and the same ingredients that lift stains are the ones flagged for residue on skin-contact fabric.

What's actually in it

The ingredients worth knowing about, and who flags them. Everything else in the bottle is doing an ordinary cleaning job.

01

Fragrance

Heavy, persistent scent is part of the ProClean identity. EWG flags high skin-allergy/irritation concern, and residue stays on worn fabric.

Flagged by · EWG cleaners database, Persil ProClean liquids (mostly F; high skin-irritation score)

02

Optical brighteners

Fluorescent dyes that stay on fabric to make whites look brighter rather than washing out. Potential skin sensitizers and not biodegradable-friendly.

03

Enzymes

Effective soil removers; can be respiratory or skin sensitizers for some people at residue levels.

Where it's genuinely fine

Cleaning power is the genuine strength. The enzyme-and-surfactant system handles heavy stains and odors that milder detergents leave behind, which is why it rates well in performance tests. If raw stain removal is the priority, it delivers.

Is Persil ProClean safe for…

Babies & toddlers

Moderate to higher concern in standard form. Choose the Sensitive Skin (fragrance-free) version and extra-rinse infant laundry.

Cats

Low concern on dried fabric. Fragrance-free reduces residue on bedding pets use.

Dogs

Low concern once laundered. Use the Sensitive Skin version for pet bedding.

Asthma / airways

Moderate concern. The strong, lasting fragrance can trigger airways on sheets and clothing; switch to Sensitive Skin.

Eczema / skin

Higher concern in standard form; EWG flags high skin-irritation. Use Persil Sensitive Skin and double-rinse.

Persil specifics

Why a detergent that cleans this well rates this badly

There is a tension worth naming. Persil ProClean wins stain-removal tests, and the same formula earns an F from EWG. Both can be true, because they measure different things.

The high performance comes from a loaded enzyme-and-surfactant system plus a strong, persistent fragrance and optical brighteners that cling to fabric on purpose. EWG's score is not about how clean your shirt gets. It is a weight-of-evidence read on ingredient hazard, and here it flags high skin-allergy and irritation potential, driven by that fragrance load and the brighteners designed to stay behind. Optical brighteners do not wash out, that is the point of them, so they sit on fabric against your skin. If you want this product's cleaning muscle without its main flag, the Sensitive Skin version drops the fragrance and is the obvious move for anyone with reactive skin.
