Is Windex toxic?
Moderate concern, driven by the ammonia in the Original formula, with an easy ammonia-free alternative on the same shelf.
Windex Original cleans glass with ammonium hydroxide (ammonia), a glycol-ether surfactant, and the signature blue dye. EWG rates it around D, with the ammonia component flagged at high concern for irritation. Ammonia is a respiratory irritant in a spray, and it must never meet bleach. SC Johnson sells an ammonia-free Windex that addresses most of this while still cleaning glass streak-free.

Ammonium hydroxide (ammonia)
A respiratory and eye irritant when sprayed, rated high concern by EWG. It is also the streak-free workhorse, so the trade-off is real. Never mix with bleach.

The ammonia-and-surfactant combination is genuinely excellent on glass and mirrors, cutting greasy films and drying streak-free. It is the benchmark a lot of glass cleaners are measured against.
Is Windex safe for…
Spray onto a cloth rather than into the air near a baby, and ventilate. The ammonia mist is the reason, not surface residue once wiped.
Keep cats out of the room while spraying ammonia, and wipe surfaces dry. Cats' airways are sensitive to ammonia vapor.
Ventilate and let surfaces dry. Avoid spraying near the dog's face or bowls.
Ammonia spray is a known airway irritant and the main reason to pick the ammonia-free Windex if anyone has asthma.
Gloves for prolonged use. The glycol ether and ammonia can dry and irritate skin with repeated direct contact.
Ammonia, streak-free chemistry, and the bird and pet caution
Ammonia earns its place in Windex because it cuts greasy fingerprint film and flashes off without leaving streaks, which is exactly what you want on glass. The same volatility means you inhale some of it when you spray, and ammonia is a recognized respiratory and eye irritant. EWG flags the ammonia component at high concern for that reason.
Pets, and birds in particular, change the math. Birds have famously efficient respiratory systems that make them more sensitive to airborne irritants than mammals, which is the same reason aerosolized fumes are a known hazard around pet birds. Spraying ammonia cleaner in a room with a bird, or in any small unventilated space with a cat, concentrates an irritant they breathe more of than you do. The simple moves: spray onto the cloth instead of the air, ventilate, keep birds and small pets out of the room, and never combine it with bleach, since ammonia plus bleach produces toxic chloramine gas. If a pet bird lives with you, the ammonia-free Windex is the straightforward choice.
